Movies in February!

February Edition (aka Black Panther Month!)

After a somewhat uninspiring slate of movies in January, February is here -- which means a big movie I've been looking forward to seeing will finally grace the big screen!! Oh, it's also Black History Month y'all! Aye! :)

I have three movies on my main watch list for this month! Also, my "maybe list" only has one on it and I have a couple on the "if it's your jam" list!

So grab your cup of joe and check out my recs and what I'm watching in theaters this month! :)

  • Black Panther
  • Annihilation
  • Game Night

BLACK PANTHER (Drama / Fantasy)

Long live the king.

"T'Challa, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king."*

The time has finally arrived -- a movie I've been looking forward to seeing since Black Panther's debut in Captain America: Civil War!! Chadwick Boseman reprises his role as T'Challa aka Black Panther in this standalone film.

There's so much excitement surrounding this movie and for good reason -- some of it due to the fact that it's the first comic book superhero movie starring a black man and predominantly black cast with a black director as well. (One other black comic book superhero that was made into a movie franchise was Blade, that starred Wesley Snipes and took place outside of the MCU back in 1998). To have a production of this caliber led by people of color is fascinating, inspiring, exhilirating -- and I really hope it lives up to the hype. Regardless though, it will be a special moment in history -- and the fact that it's being released during Black History Month is definitely not a coincidence! :)

Writer/director Ryan Coogler comes off of his hit film, Creed (and his debut film Fruitvale Station) to bring us this newest superhero installment in the MCU, along with another one of his frequent collaborators, Oscar nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison (nominated for the Netflix film Mubound, Morrison's nomination marks the first time a woman has been nominated for an Oscar for best cinematography)!

I plan on seeing this movie multiple times in the theater! :)

With an exceptional cast, which includes Oscar nominated Daniel Kaluuya, Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown, along with Michael B. Jordan, Andy Serkis, Martin Freeman, Letiticia Wright, Danai Gurira (from The Walking Dead), Angela Bassett, and Oscar winners Forest Whitaker and Lupita N'yongo -- please go out and support Black Panther, when it arrives in theaters on February 16th (evening showings start on February 15th)!! Let's pack the theater! :)

ANNIHILATION (Thriller / Fantasy)

Fear what's inside.

"A biologist (Natalie Portman) signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don't apply."*

First and foremost, I'm super excited about this film because one of my fave gals in the biz, Gina Rodriguez, stars in it! Also, I became a fan of sc-fi writer Alex Garland when he had his directing debut with his original script and engrossing film, Ex Machina -- starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Oscar winner Alicia Vikander -- back in 2014! (What a film!)

Here we have Garland adapting a fan favorite book by Jeff VanderMeer. Led by Oscar winner Natalie Portman, we follow her journey into an ecological disaster zone, known as Area X in the book, with a group of other scientists in North America as she tries to figure out what's threatening her husband's (Oscar Isaac) life.

The trailer for sure captivated my interests and I absolutely love seeing the multicultural main cast of women leading the film! And I love me some Oscar Isaac too!! :)

Written and directed by Alex Garland -- and starring Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), and Oscar Isaac -- check out Annihilation when it bursts into theaters on February 23rd

GAME NIGHT (Comedy / Action / Mystery)

This is not a game.

"A group of friends who meet regularly for game nights find themselves involved in an actual real murder mystery."*

I mean, Rachel McAdams, who's like my main girl crush and Jason Bateman in a comedy/action/mystery movie -- together!? Yes, please!! :) I honestly don't really care what the movie is about, the fact that Rachel is in it peaks my interest for sure! Ha! :)

The premise and trailer, however, make it look like it'll be a fun time at the movies! If you're looking for something a bit lighter to watch on the weekend of the 23rd, I recommend this one. But hey, you can always do a double feature (Annilhilation and Game Night)!

From the directing duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein and starring Rachel McAdams, Jason Bateman, Kyle Chandler, Jeffrey Wright, Lamorne Morris, Kylie Bunbury, and Jesse Plemons -- check out Game Night when it hits theaters on February 23rd!

A Maaaaybe Movie I Might See:

  • The 15:17 to Paris (Drama / Thriller) -- starring the real-life heroes of the actual events and directed by Clint Eastwood -- in theaters on February 9th.

If It's Your Jam!

A list of films and their release dates that might fancy your interest:

  • Fifty Shades Freed - February 9th.
  • Winchester - February 2nd.

That's the February multiplex watch list! After a small beginning of the year slump (which is common for January), we get a huge blockbuster movie, along with a best selling novel adaptation and a fun comedy -- a great mix of good content for the month!

Go check out one or all of these if you can! Also, check out MoviePass if you haven't yet! For a low monthly fee you can see one movie a day (it works at over 4,000 theaters)!

Let me know what you're gonna see this month on Instagram!

Have fun at the movies! :)
