WHAT TO WATCH!
September is here and carries a great mix of award worthy films and blockbuster fun!
Game of Thrones just ended (holy crap you guys -- what a season)! I'm going to really miss the cinematic beauty and storytelling of this show (also our favorite episodic shows will be premiering later this month as well). But, we're getting closer to awards season, which (hopefully) means we'll start seeing some films that (hopefully) push boundaries and are out-of-the-box fantastic! Films that make us want to leave the bold, fresh tv shows we watch at home...to go out for the night to the theater!
I'm looking forward to a few films in September. All three of them actually have something in common -- they're based on true events! But I'm extremely excited about one in particular, starring recent Oscar winner and one of my favorite actresses Emma Stone! Along with my list of "movies to watch"...I have my "maaaybe list" which includes films from a variety of genres -- and I've added one to see if "that's your jam" but that I most likely won't watch.
So let's get to it shall we! :)
Here's my list of films I'm going to see in the theater this month:
- Battle of the Sexes
- American Made
BATTLE OF THE SEXES (Sport / Biography)
The film I'm most looking forward to this month is Battle of the Sexes! It's "the true story of the 1973 tennis match between world number one Billie Jean King and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs."*
I'm a huge fan of tennis. It's one of my favorite sports to watch (especially my favorite athlete, Serena Williams) -- and I love going out and volleying when I can! Also, Emma Stone is one of my favorite actresses. It was great seeing her win her first Oscar this past year for La La Land -- and I was so hyped to hear that she was going to be starring in a film about tennis...and as Billie Jean King at that! I'm most excited to see her in a biographical, sports-centered role and in something we haven't seen from her before. She put on a little bit of muscle weight and I'm looking forward to seeing the "tennis" scenes!
Billie Jean King is one of the most well known tennis players in the world, and this match is one of the most famous ones to date (I guess that's why there's a movie made about it!) Ha! :)
Steve Carrell also stars in this film as Bobby Riggs, which puts him back opposite Emma Stone since Crazy Stupid Love! You guys remember that one!? :) These two actors with comedic backgrounds have made great strides toward a more dramatic career, while remaining true to their roots. They're both so great at picking their roles -- and these characters seem to be on track to be well crafted roles for these two!
Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, make sure to catch Oscar winner Emma Stone and Steve Carrell on the big screen in Battle of the Sexes, in theaters on September 22nd!
STRONGER (Drama / Biography)
Based on a true story, "Stronger is the inspiring real life story of Jeff Bauman, an ordinary man who captured the hearts of his city and the world to become a symbol of hope following the infamous 2013 Boston Marathon bombing."* Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Jeff Bauman in Stronger, who helped to identify one of the suspects, but struggles with his own physical and emotional rehabilitation.
I've been looking forward to seeing Gyllenhaal in another awards contender film (which this one has potential to be) since his standout role in Nightcrawler. I'm sure Gyllenhaal will move hearts with his role in this film, after watching the trailer for it.
We're creeping into that time of year (one of my favorite times of year lol!) when we start seeing more award contenders -- and I'm loving every minute of it! :)
Directed by David Gordon Green and also starring the talented Tatiana Maslany, Stronger premieres in theaters on September 22nd!
AMERICAN MADE (Biography / Action / Drama)
American Made follows "a pilot that lands work for the CIA and as a drug runner in the south during the 1980s." Tom Cruise stars in this story inspired by true events about Barry Seal and his dealings with the CIA.
When it comes to Tom Cruise, I'm a fan of his earlier work the most. I still, to this day, watch his older movies often, like: Rain Man (one of the best), Jerry Maguire, The Firm, and my favorite Tom Cruise movie and a favorite film of mine, A Few Good Men! After coming off of his not so well received summer movie, The Mummy, it'll be great to see Cruise step a little away from his super action packed, "do my own stunts" self a bit and return to his drama (and comedic) roots in a way, in American Made.
After seeing the trailer, American Made seems to be a fun ride. I hope it delivers!
Directed by Doug Liman, catch American Made, at the end of the month -- in theaters on September 29th!
SOME MAAAAYBE MOVIES I MIGHT MAYBE SEE:
- Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Action / Adventure) -- starring Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Halle Berry, and Colin Firth, this sequel came close to being on my "movies to watch" list! I just added it to my maybe list because I might not get around to watching it this month. But there's a good chance I still might. You can see this one when it hits theaters on September 22nd.
- American Assassin (Thriller / Action) -- starring Michael Keaton, Dylan O'Brien, and Sanaa Lathan, and based on the novel of the same name by Vince Flynn -- hits theaters on September 15th.
- Home Again (Romance / Comedy) -- starring Reese Witherspoon, this directorial debut from the daughter of the multi-hyphenate Nancy Meyers, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, hits theaters on September 7th!
- Mother (Mystery) -- starring Javier Bardem and Jennifer Lawrence and directed by Darren Aronofsky, in theaters on September 15th.
If It's Your Jam!
A film I won't see that I'm sure a lot of other people are completely excited for, is (drumroll), It!
Yes, the remake of Steven King's famous story, It. I have no desire to watch this one. I'm not a huge fan of scary movies or horror films in general, so I'm going to pass (atleast for now), but if that's your jam, then definitely make sure you catch this one in the theater, on September 8th!
I'm going to be doing a lot of traveling over the next couple of weeks, so I won't be able to make it to the theater as much as I'd like. I hope to catch the three movies listed above, though, when they hit theaters this month!
Ps, I wrote this post from Paris! That's why there's a croissant and (hot) espresso in my photo! Ha! Iced is still my most fave! :)
